The Homeless Realize Their Value After Photographers Donate Portrait Sessions

Dozens of homeless Milwaukeeans are improving their self-esteem with professional portraits from Help-Portrait Milwaukee, a local branch of the global initiative that arranges for photography sessions to benefit those in need. Worldwide, more than 200,000 portraits have been taken by more than 16,000 volunteer photographers in 60 countries, according to the international organization.

Actors Help Veterans to Vent Emotions Using Shakespeare

Milwaukee theater professionals have been working with local veterans through intensive weekend workshops that allow emotions to boil from the cauldron of conflict within, using the words Shakespeare. The Feast of Crispian program, run out of the Milwaukee's Veterans Affairs hospital, has been such a success that last week it received a $50,000 grant from the Helen Bader Foundation to launch an all-veteran, fully-staged production of Julius Caesar.

Hero Brothers Pulled Boy, 4, Out of Burning SUV

Firefighting brothers John and Joel Rechlitz arrived on the scene within minutes of the accident which flipped the SUV on its side. A group of good Samaritans were already at work, struggling to free the family from the blazing vehicle — but it took guts and a combined 29 years of firefighting experience to save the life of the 4-year-old boy trapped inside by his car seat.

Sewage-Sniffing Dogs Locate Trouble Spots Along Milwaukee River

Canines have a sense of smell 1,000 times better than humans. Now, Milwaukee Riverkeepers has partnered with Environmental Canine Services to sniff and test over 50 manholes around Milwaukee. If the dogs hit on a spot, underground pipes are tested and water samples sent to the Great Lakes Water Institute for analysis.
