PEOPLE has announced its list of the 50 "Companies that Care," highlighting those that are going above and beyond the status quo to benefit their employees and families, the community, and the environment.

The rankings were based on surveys from over 4.5 million employees at 1,000 companies across the the United States.

To identify the top caring businesses, the magazine teamed up with Great Place to Work, a research firm with an extensive opinion database from employees about their experiences in the workplace and whether their bosses have made a difference in their lives or communities.

Some of the well-known companies that made the list include such retail giants as IKEA, Nordstrom, AT&T, Blizzard, Chobani, and Patagonia, many of which have been featured on WS in the past for their progressive policies.

Rankings also reflect an assessment of the generosity of each organization's employee benefits and its philanthropic and community support—focusing on activities occurring in the last year.

Salesforce, the San Francisco-based cloud computing company that sells customer contact management tools, landed the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row. Salesforce has long been known for its lavish benefits and "family" culture among its 30,000 employees. It was also cited for pay equity policies. When CEO Marc Benioff saw an analysis that revealed a pay gap between men and women at the firm—he stepped up to fix it, dedicating $3 million in 2016 to correct the discrepancy, then another $3 million in 2017 to correct compensation differences by gender, race and ethnicity.
