To ease the strain on federal employees going unpaid during the government shutdown, numerous restaurants in the Washington, D.C., area began offering free sandwiches or discounted food to furloughed workers last week.

To ease the strain on federal employees going unpaid during the government shutdown, numerous restaurants in the Washington, D.C., area began offering free sandwiches or discounted food to furloughed workers last week.

Sprinkles gave out free cupcakes, The Daily Dish offered free cups of coffee. And José Andrés, one of the nation's leading chefs, offered up free sandwiches at three of his seven popular D.C.-area restaurants, Jaleo, Zaytinya and Oyamel.

One restaurant, SouperGirl, took the opportunity to chastise Representatives who caused the hardship. It posted a sign outside: Members of Congress will be charged DOUBLE!
