It might be a bride's worst nightmare: on the eve of her wedding day, something goes wrong – like the carefully prepared hand-made wedding cake falling apart in the trunk of a car.

This is exactly what happened to Millie and Matt Maltby when they were on their way to their wedding venue in Brixham, England earlier this month.

"I had baked, secured, dowelled and decorated my own cake and we were quite cautious to drive carefully," Millie wrote on Facebook. "However, when we arrived and opened the cake box it appeared that the hot weather caused the buttercream to melt and the cake just gave up."

"I was a very calm bride and it didn't seem to matter as I was marrying the man of my dreams and everything else seemed so insignificant. Matt, on the other hand, was heartbroken, he felt awful as I had taken so long to bake and decorate the cake and I had been taunting him about how yummy the cake was going to be."

"I was sad to think that we wouldn't have a cake – I've always been the crafty/baking type and I knew my family would be expecting to see something amazing. The hotel whisked away the cake and told me that they would figure something out for me. I pushed it to the back of my mind and tried to enjoy having all my family around me the night before my wedding day."

As fate would have it, Clare Vaz of Patty's Piece of Cake bakery was delivering cupcakes to the hotel at the same time that everyone was worrying over the damaged wedding cake.

Vaz then got to repairing the cake using the surviving segments of Millie's original creation.

"With time against me, I just didn't have time to bake cool and decorate a new middle tier, so thankfully, I had a dummy cake which I used to create the new middle tier," Vaz wrote on Facebook. "The top tier (a delicious smelling lemon cake) thankfully I could save. So I stripped it back down, crumb-coated, and re-covered it in white."

The next day, Vaz had the cake – which was an almost identical recreation of the original – back to the hotel in time for the wedding.

"I haven't had the pleasure of meeting the bride and groom, I don't even know their name other than Mille and Matt from the lovely cake topper," says Vaz. "So Mrs. Mille and Mr. Matt… whilst cake plans sadly didn't go in our favor, I am pleased to have hopefully saved the day with a cake that is not as perfect as your original, but will help make memories of your special day."

"To take the time to do that for a stranger is just astounding, and something you just don't see anymore," says Millie. "I don't think I'll ever be able to thank Clare enough."
