A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed extremely low birth-weight infants attained similar levels of education, employment and independence as young adults compared to normal birth-weight infants. Despite challenges including cerebral palsy, blindness, mental impairment and autism, if they get help in school, especially early on, and support through their early school years, "many of them do overcome learning disabilities or any other problem they might have."
