After a year of silence, the Israeli prime minister phoned the Palestinian president to offer a holiday greeting—and a message of hope.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Friday night as a goodwill gesture on Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday that celebrates the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.

Netanyahu told his Palestinian counterpart that Israelis want peace and will work toward regional stability. Abbas said he hoped the two could settle on a peace accord in the next 12 months.

The phone call came 13 months after the two last spoke in June, 2014.
