While locals mourned the loss of a beloved hot dog restaurant, fellow chefs got together with a recipe for reopening the place and giving it a proper send-off, while raising money for the owner's cancer medical bills.

For one week only, a different chef each day will bring his or her own style to the resurrected menu at Skippy's Hot Dogs in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — with all the proceeds going to owner Mike Rothman's medical expenses.

Rothman suddenly closed his business a month ago after a surprise diagnosis led to brain surgery on a tumor. It left him with motor control issues on one side of his body. Unable to work, it looked like Mike had rolled and sold its last homemade soft pretzel.

But fellow chefs jumped in to help, first with a GoFundMe page raising more than $15,000, and then with the idea of a one week finale for Skippy's where volunteers will donate their time and rally neighbors to celebrate the local institution one last time.

When the doors opened Saturday, hot dogs started selling like hotcakes. The line was out the door and down the sidewalk as people showed up to remember Skippy's, and to help out the "Pretzel Man".
