All 955 South African gold miners who were trapped underground for 30 hours this week have reportedly been rescued and treated for dehydration.
The workers were trapped in the Beatrix gold mine of Theunissen after a massive storm caused a power outage in the area. Since the only way in and out of the tunnel is by using an electronic lift, the miners were stuck 3,200 feet (1,000 meters) down without any means of escape since Wednesday.
Once engineers were able to restore power to the lift, the miners were brought back to the surface in groups.
Ambulance workers who were waiting on site to treat the miners found that – apart from mild dehydration and elevated blood pressure – the crew was unharmed.
According to France 24, the workers showed "no indication so far that anyone has been in distress".
