NH University Uses Landfill Gas to Power Green Graduation

The University of New Hampshire is the first in the nation to receive most of its heat and electricity from landfill gas. It showcased the achievement at the eco-themed graduation ceremony Saturday. The university has celebrated its efforts to be green by using gas from a landfill to power the loudspeakers at its commencement and turning leftover food from the ceremony into compost.

London Buys Hydrogen-Fueled Red Buses

The Mayor of London announced Tuesday that ten new red double-decker hydrogen powered buses will join London's bus fleet by 2010 to reduce air pollution and CO2 emissions in the congested UK capital. The hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles will produce no pollution or carbon dioxide, and, as an added benefit, drastically cut noise levels.

Vets Without Borders Bringing Relief to Animals in War Torn Africa

Two American veterinarians are heading off to war- torn Liberia this month to help the animals in the West African country who have suffered because of a 14-year civil war. The two vets are going on behalf of a nonprofit organization called Veterinarians Without Borders to establish the Veterinarians to Liberia Project.

Alawites and Sunnis in northern Lebanon's main city signed a reconciliation accord late on Monday aimed at restoring state control to the port and ending sectarian bloodshed there. At least 23 people were killed in Tripoli during clashes in May.

Students Encouraging Local Bars to Recycle Glass

Overland Park university seniors called 30 bars around Lawrence, Kansas asking them if they recycled glass. None of them did, so their new group, Students for Bar Recycling, leapt into action delivering 145 pounds of glass to a recycler last Saturday -- bottles collected from a single bar on a Friday night.
