A pit bull named Smoke is currently on a more than 2,500-mile journey home to California after disappearing three years ago and being found in Florida. It has taken a nationwide, metaphorical village and a Seattle-based pet detective to bring Smoke closer and closer to his family.

It has taken a nationwide, metaphorical "village" and a Seattle-based "pet detective" to bring Smoke closer and closer to his family.

Animal lovers volunteered to participate "totally from the kindness of their hearts," a non-profit leader told ABCNews.com.

The pit bull was passed between the volunteers' cars and yet curled up peacefully for each leg of the journey.
