Congressional leaders unveiled a more conciliatory tone of cooperation in the face of a new Washington landscape that is suddenly more Democratic.

In an 11-minute speech, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) hinted that the days of partisan "my way or the highway" may be over. Reading from a teleprompter, he suggested that he would work with Obama on the imminent fiscal issues.

"Mr. President, this is your moment. We're ready to be led, not as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans. We want you to lead — not as a liberal or a conservative, but as the president of the United States of America. We want you to succeed. Let's challenge ourselves to find the common ground that has eluded us."

"This will take time. But if we're all striving for a solution, I'm confident we can get there," said Boehner, who referenced the bipartisan work of Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill.
