A Vancouver charity, RainCity Housing, is giving homeless people in this rainy city some dry coverage and a place to rest by converting city benches into pop-up shelters.

This is according to Bill Loftus, a retired building contractor who has patented an application for the fast-growing, carbon-sucking plant that can grow 14 feet in a single year.
Originally from Africa, the 4,000-year-old crop was used primarily for its fiber. Loftus's Evironmental Building Technologies has a wider hope for the plant.
