There weren't a lot of jobs suited to Russell Carey, so the young man with autism, who also suffers from seizures, was given the chance to use his passion to earn his own income.

When Carey is walking, he's an unstoppable force. The 28-year-old just doesn't like to stand still — he has to keep moving.

He tried a job as a dog walker, but he wanted to wander farther than the dogs could even go.

His initial $80 fee buys a client a custom sign and an hour's worth of walking and waving it at passing traffic over six weeks.

Real estate agent Clay Miller is a steady client who says Carey's Signs gets his business a lot of attention.

"I've had a lot of people stop me and comment on it or post photos to Facebook," he told the Whidbey News-Times.

For a man who requires 24-hour care, the job offers Carey a sense of independence, the opportunity to pay his own rent and bills, and, best of all, the chance to be on the move.
