Berlin Turns Former Secret Police HQ into Home for 500 refugees
The former headquarters of East Germany's feared Stasi secret police has become a sanctuary for hundreds of refugees pouring into the country.

Once the most feared building in East Berlin, the headquarters where the communist secret police plotted Cold War spy operations, is now a welcoming safe-house shielded against the cold for asylum seekers.

Offices leftover from the dreaded East German Stasi now provide warm beds for more than 400 refugees. Plans for the three-month temporary shelter include housing up to 900 refugees at any point during the winter.

City leaders in Berlin raced to convert the building in late November, as they saw the first snow of the season and temperatures drop into the thirties while refugees arrived at the border.

800,000 displaced people are being welcomed into Germany as the country looks for places to put them all. Gyms, public halls, and empty airplane hangars at the former Tempelhof Airport are all being used as temporary shelters, according to The Telegraph.
